Walking in Sheffield
Sheffield is rightly famous for it’s ‘Golden Frame‘, especially the Peak District National Park to the west, parts of which are within the City boundary. This means that people seeking a walk naturally tend to gravitate towards going out into Derbyshire.
However, Sheffield is also rightly famous for being the greenest city in England, and the city has as much open space outside the National Park as in it, which rarely gets as much attention. All areas of the city have woodlands and open spaces, many quite substantial, such as Ecclesall Woods, Grenoside, Bowden-Housteads and many others.
Walking In Sheffield attempts to correct the bias towards the Peak District, where it is well known that much of the land is under stress from too many visitors. Walks are chosen for their beautiful woodlands and open spaces, and also stunning panoramic views from the famed seven hills, as well as urban interest. Many interesting urban areas are becoming neglected and forgotten as people find it all to easy to pop in the car and get away.
Walks are also deliberately not energetic, to allow time for relaxation, conversation and understanding the often interesting history. Sometimes, the average pace can be as low as one mile per hour. Walks vary from as short as 3 miles to over 7, and Sheffield hills means some steep climbs are inevitable, but most wlaks are easily accesible for most people
All walks are linked to public transport to make it possible to avoid using the car on our already far to busy roads.
A walk is arranged, usually once a month, on a Saturday morning. These are deliberately urban rather than country-side walks, and usually start from a bus stop, to make it easy for people to get to the start of the walk. Generally they are 3 – 5 miles, so accessible for most people.
*‘All weather walking’*- walks will usually take place as long as one person indicates that they plan to come. As Billy Connolly says, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.”
