48 sponsored poets will each read for 8 minutes at the Sheffield Poem-a-thon on Satuday 2nd April, between 10:00am and 6:00pm. There will be refreshments, a tombola and a bookstall.

The poets will be raising money for ASSIST Sheffield (charity number: 1154862) who support failed asylum seekers – who are not allowed to work, register as homeless or to be placed in in local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling for food, clothes, and accommodation.

ASSIST says:
£5 could cover expenses for a weekend’s hospitality for an asylum seeker in need of somewhere to sleep.
£17 could cover travel expenses to enable an asylum seeker to get to medical and legal appointments.
£20 could give a vulnerable asylum seeker a week’s ASSIST grant to enable them to buy some food.
