Walking in the steps of John Woolman

A Wonderful Event – Raising Money for QPSW by Walking in the Steps of John Woolman

This May and June Margaret Johnston, a Quaker from Bolton Meeting, is planning a walk for peace by following the route John Woolman took in 1772, walking around 500 miles from London to York. Sheffield Central Meeting is on this route.

Margaret’s main objective is to raise money to support the work of Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) in South Asia and Ekta Parishad (a partner of QPSW in the South Asia Peace Alliance) http://www.quaker.org.uk/south-asia-peace-links

This is rather a wonderful event and Sheffield Quakers are happy to get involved. Various Friends have offered hospitality and assistance with route planning, and to organise a reception at the Meeting House. Others are going to encourage and collect sponsorship.

By walking for peace, Margaret will raise awareness of, and show solidarity with, the courageous efforts of the marginalised people of India who are walking from Orissa to Delhi next year, covering around 1,000 villages, to demand justice in a way that is peaceful and dignified. She will draw attention to the parallels between Woolman and Gandhi, and remind us all of how much we have to learn from their witness.

There will be a dedicated online sponsorship webpage for Margaret. Paper sponsorship forms will also be available. Friends House will keep Meetings up-to-date with developments.
